VDA AdBlue® is an innovative solution for reducing pollutant emissions – especially nitrogen oxide – in diesel vehicles. What you need to know.
With SCR technology, the watery urea solution AdBlue® is introduced into the exhaust gas stream via the injection technology. Ammonia released downstream in the SCR catalytic converter converts up to 80% of the nitrogen oxide (NOx) into harmless nitrogen (N₂) and water (H₂O).As vehicle density increases, convenient AdBlue® dispensers are also being installed at gas stations in Europe. The petroleum and automotive industries must work closely together to establish a Europe-wide network for passenger cars. A number of truck stops are currently installing AdBlue® at their filling stations. In cooperation with German vehicle manufacturers, Shell is testing modern AdBlue® filling stations. The initial results are being reviewed for the further improvement of filling station technology. Demand will show where further pumps are called for.In the future, a map along the lines of the website findadblue.com will show drivers of modern diesel vehicles with SCR systems where they can refuel AdBlue®. Drivers will thus be able to conveniently locate all the relevant filling stationsfrom the updated information on available pumps.
How does AdBlue work? Our AdBlue guide is perfect for diesel car drivers who want to understand how to check and top-up fluid levels.
AdBlue is a diesel exhaust fluid, not a fuel additive. It's stored in a separate tank and is topped up via a (usually) blue filler cap located either next to your fuel filler, in the boot or under the bonnet. Many new diesel cars use a fluid called AdBlue. If your car uses AdBlue, you'll probably need to top it up at least once between services.Find out what Adblue is, how it works and why it’s important to keep an eye on dashboard warnings – particularly if you’re a high-mileage motorist.

I rented a car out here in Germany and it takes diesel…. I keep getting this message when i turn the car on relating to Adblue. I’m an American who drives a car that takes regular gas. And yes i already tried googling but my google is all in German(idk how to switch it back to English) We’re struggling…Achually AdBlue is what it’s called in European countries. In America it’s referred to as DEF. Which Peak is the major maker tho there are other brands I’m sure. DEF(AdBlue) is made using urea or urine. But the system is so badly designed that it soon crystallises on the Nox sensor, costing hundreds to replace (mine £750). That's if the injector doesn't break (mine £350), or the Adblue tank leak, or the level sensor fail, or the Adblue heater fail, or the Adblue pump fail...If only somebody made a comparison test with Adblue and another vehicle with adblue delete in terms of emissions.... I can't wrap my head around the theory of DEF/ Adblue, you add piss into the exhaust and it makes the exhaust "clean".

DEF is also sold as AdBlue, a registered trademark of the German Association of the Automotive Industry. In early December 2021, the Australian National Road Transport Association also raised concerns about a shortage of DEF in the country due to the shortage of urea in China. China capped exports to protect its domestic supplies and rising DEF prices. By mid-December, there was approximately 7 weeks' supply of AdBlue left in Australia.

What exactly is AdBlue and why do you need it? Here's everything you need to know...
What is AdBlue? Good question. You might have heard it’s a fuel additive and assumed it’s a fuel economy thing. It isn’t. You might even have heard it’s made from pig’s wee. It isn’t that, either. Phew. Imagine the smell. You might also have assumed it’s actually blue. It’s an exhaust fluid for diesel cars. AdBlue is a brand name for a liquid mixture of deionised water and carbamide, AKA urea, which is basically the main component of urine. Hence the idea that AdBlue is pig wee. Thankfully, AdBlue isn’t made by collecting pig or indeed human waste donations. It is not. Although the AdBlue spout in a car is almost always next to the fuel spout under the filler flap (if not, check under the bonnet or consult your manual), AdBlue is held in a separate tank, usually under the boot floor.AdBlue is an exhaust fluid that’s used to reduce harmful tailpipe emissions in cars, vans, buses and lorries powered by diesel; petrol-powered vehicles do not use AdBlue. It’s designed to reduce harmful nitrous oxides (NOx) that are specific to diesel engines, by neutralising them before they get into the air.
This guide to AdBlue® will answer many of your questions about what it is, who should be using it & its technical specifications
There are two ways of achieving a reduction in NOx that forms from the combustion of diesel fuel: through a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system and through exhaust gas recirculation. If your vehicle uses the selective catalytic reduction system, then you’ll need AdBlue®.From September 2015, all diesel vehicles registered in EU member states must meet Euro 6 emission standards which aim to reduce the nitrogen oxide emissions produced. AdBlue® is a legal requirement in diesel vehicles manufactured after this date to ensure they meet these standards. As AdBlue® is a diesel exhaust fluid, it’s used at a much slower rate than your fuel so it lasts a lot longer than the diesel in your fuel tank – around a rate of 5% AdBlue® to diesel fuel is a rule of thumb worth following. With the use of AdBlue®, harmful exhaust gases are treated before they’re released. The fluid is sprayed into the exhaust system, where it reacts with the gases, and the selective catalytic reduction catalyst breaks them down into harmless nitrogen and water vapour.

AdBlue is a solution used by some diesel-engined vehicles to reduce their Nitrogen Oxide emissions. AdBlue needs regular refills for the engine to work properly
In a nutshell, AdBlue is a liquid substance that can be used in diesel engines with selective catalytic reduction. It's main purpose is to help cars cut back on the amount of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions they release. The term AdBlue was coined by the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) to please the eyes and ears of the general public. It is the term most people now use to designate any kind of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF).Like most other fluids that go into a car, the AdBlue does not last forever. That means you'll have to top it up from time to time, either by turning to help from a dealership, or by simply doing it yourself.A vehicle that is being driven hard, but also a car that's only driven in start-stop traffic conditions, might have higher AdBlue consumption levels. A vehicle that drives a good mix of city and highway miles will see lower consumption levels.
